Jose, I'm sure you always hear the complaints, but maybe not so often the compliments. Let me pass on a compliment for the hospitality extended to Saskia & I during our recent short visit to Chile. Without doubt your homestay is in a fantastic location - easy walking distance to most of the major attractions of Santiago. Your collection is, well, not my "can of coke", but a sight to see. I must extend a special thanks for your suggestion to dine at Como Agua para Chocolate. The best (biggest) meal we have eaten in a very long time, combined with an extensive selection of Chilean wines in a great atmospehere. Truely a night we will remember forever. I wish you every success in the years to come. A happy traveler has a mouth and many friends. Take care, Larry & Saskia Samuels

Thanks again Jose, we hope to see you once again. We will come back..... Kathrin and Klaus

Going to Santiago was a bit intimidating to me, to say the least. Portland is a small city comparatively. I feel very lucky that I ended up at Josי's. Not only did the apartment make me feel right at home, but I found my host to be exceptionally welcoming. It was immediately apparent that he thouroughly enjoys meeting new people and that he has a genuine interest in making his guests comfortable. Between his Chile guidebooks, brochures, and numerous post-its strewn throughout the apartment, I had everything I needed to design my own gameplan to enjoy the city. In addition, when I felt lazy, all I had to do was ask. Josי was always anxious to make suggestions. At the end of my trip, when exhaustion set in from the effort of learning to speak a foreign language, I chose to return to Josי's homestay for refuge. This was not in my original itinerary but I had felt so at ease the first time I stayed there that I wanted to return. I consider Josי my friend as well as my host and give him a great deal of the credit for my current love of Chile in general. I will always be grateful to him. p.s. the convenient computer access was fantastic

If you are going to Santiago, you must stay with Joe. As our first port of call in South America, Joe provided us with a hearty welcome and gave us a lot of assistance. He made becoming accustomed to our surroundings so much easier. At Joe's you have comfort, privacy and security. You also have a wonderful host who will leave you to do your own thing if you want or will be happy to show you the sights of Santiago. We could not have asked for a better beginning to our trip. Joe is also a little "travieso", which makes your stay even more enjoyable. Thanks Joe. Jane and Phill.

Hi Jose, I like the new smiling picture of you on the website! I am feeling much better now after getting home and having the stitches removed. Thank you so much for giving us a home away from home when I was released from hospital and for your care and shoulder to cry on when I was feeling 'down'. Also thank you driving me to see the Andes, something that I just didn't think was a possibility happen. It meant so much and was so kind of you and way beyond anything we have encountered staying in other homestays. We are looking forward to seeing you again when we next visit Santiago. We hope one day you will visit Melbourne and when you do a room and warm welcome in our home is waiting for you. Hi there Jose, Como Estas?!?! Ryan just forwarded me your message about the photo page. Nice work! You might remember the three of us, Ryan, Ben and Ed? The young Australian guys? You have so many guests, I can't imagine how you remember them all! It's been nearly a year since we stayed with you in December 2002. We had such a great time. It was definitely a highlight of our trip, staying with you. Thanks for having us. If you're ever in Sydney, look us up and we will definitely show you around or take you out for a drink. I have to say that you were a great host and your apartment was the most nicely decorated I have ever seen, anywhere, in the entire world!!! You have a great contrast between "Fine Arts" in the lounge room, and "Pop Culture" in the kitchen! Thanks for the pictures. We had a good time throughout the rest of South America.

Whenever I will come back to Santiago - this will be my address!! Woo Hoooo .....well, we are here and found the hostel without too many hassles. The place is clean, confortable and close to everything. We managed to find a typical Chilean restaurant last night for dinner and was served a large slab of meat as an introduction to the local cuisine. I think I am still digesting the 1/2 a cow I ate!. Today was the first full day in Santiago and surprise, surprise, we mastered the local rail and bus systems and found our way to the largest vineyard in Chile ... Concha Y Toro. Nice place, beautiful ground, HUGE cellar and lovely wine. We bought a bottle and are currently having it with dinner. Tomorrow I take off for Lima and meet the tour group and start walking. Looking forward to starting the adventure and having some fun. That's about it. I am alive, the spanish is sufficient to buy stuff and find our way around. Take care, love Penny

After having stayed at Jose's in August 2002, I can only say what a great time I had. The appartment itself is so centrally located, with all the required amenities and is so comfotable. Jose himself is an amazingly friendly and hospitable guy, who could not do enough for me or his other guests; recommending travel plans, arranging tours and even taking me out to some of the sights in Santiago and Valparaiso. I know that next time I am in Chile I will definately stay with Jose and highly recommend it to any other travellers passing through Santiago. Thanks Jose for making my stay so memorable.

Very interesting and chock full of information. Good on you. Keep boxing on. Can you design your pages 640x480, most people on the internet using that format. Hola Jose! Muchos saludos desde Peru y muchos buenos recuerdos de Chile. Fuiste la primera mejor impresion que tuvimos del pais. I absolutely agree with all guests below... Jose's place is definitively the best place you can stay at Chile. It is always very important for us to find a quiet and clean place to stay, and not only we found it, it was incredibly cozy, clean and so quiet! You get a great view of the city from his apartment! It's so well located, near the Main Plaza, museums, good restaurants, main avenue, Metro, etc. And best of all, Jose is such a good host and great person, treated us like friends from the moment we called him from the airport. Hey Jose! How goes it? I'm in second semester of classes at Peking U now and getting ready to ditch class for a couple weeks and do some more travelling...going to Guizhou, Three Gorges Tour, and Huangshan, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. A friend of mine has a great shot of a huge boat made out of coca cola cans... he doesn't have the negatives now but i might be able to get you a copy when i go to the states. Have you seen the book yet? for the rest of you all, i stayed at jose's place for close to a month in june/july of 2001. The place is really neat and clean, you get plenty of privacy, and it's like having your own little home to come back to after experiencing the sights and thrills of santiago... it's also very centrally located in the city. Best of all, Jose's a super guy, and will make sure you feel right at home. He knows a heck of a lot about Santiago and can point out the best places to eat, party, hang-out, etc... Can't go wrong.

I and my girlfriend stayed here last November. It's a comfortable modern apartment, very well located, and large enough to allow adequate privacy. Jose treats you as a friend rather than as a customer, which makes all the difference. He has guide books, but his personal advice about good places to visit while in Chile was especially useful. Not only that, he phoned to book rooms in other guesthouses and helped in various other ways so that we could more freely enjoy our brief trip. I would especially recommend starting any visit to Chile by staying a few days at Jose's. -- Peter J

I had the opportunity to stay at Jose Estay's place in January, 2002. The location is excellent, just 2- 3 blocks from the Santiago metro, walking distance to the central district of Santiago (Paseo Ahumada and Huerfanos). It is on the 11th floor, it is a very quiet building, excellent 24 hr security person on site. The place is cozy, very clean... And Jose is an excellent host! Any question you may have regarding Santiago or travel info around Chile, he can certainly assist you, and he does not have an answer on the spot he would generally find an answer for you at the end of the day. As much as I enjoy independent/non tour bus travel, it is nice to know someone who lives in the country who can give you a bit inside information about getting around the place. Highly recommended, and most definitely I would stay there again on my next wisit to Santiago. For those of you coming to Chile... it is a beautiful country, people are very nice and friendly. My suggestion is to give yourself extra time, the country is very diverse and distances are long... it literally goes from desert north to glacier south and everything in between except perhaps a tropical rainforest. Two weeks too little, three- four weeks would be more reasonable. Buses are reliable and the network is very extensive. Tur Bus is a good company I used. The air tickets can be a bit pricey, but with planning foreigners can get a Lanchile Pass (Chile) or Mercosur pass (Mercosur countries) along with their international ticket. Any questions? Check out the multiple links on this website or just drop me an email... english or spanish is OK.. nelson_rivera_od@yahoo.com
